| Abstract | Buildings that are inaccessible become exclusive elements for individuals with impairments. In the case of senior high schools, defects in the designed physical environment hinder the right to inclusive education. In this light, the overall goal of this research is to discover, analyze, and assess the problems that jeopardize senior high schools building accessibility and the use of their spaces by individuals with disabilities. A case study at La Nkwatanang municipality, focusing on three (3) purposefully selected Senior High Schools with around 364 pupils, supported the research methodology. Eighty (80) buildings and facilities at these schools were studied over a four-month period using a combination of quantitative (semi-structured questionnaires) and qualitative (interviews) approaches. All around the world, there are numerous and difficult issues linked with the admission of students with disabilities to secondary (senior high) institutions. This issue is worsened further by difficulties encountered in the constructed environment of these institutions, with Ghana being no exception. As key results, it is seen that 80% of the problems are related to accessible space, tactile signage, toilet components and accessories, and visual signage. The key contribution is a fault mapping process centered on geographical accessibility characteristics and requirements. |
