A Moral Discourse on Parents as the Primary Agents of Non-formal Education in Kenya

| Abstract | It is not possible to think of an educated person whose intellectual prowess and physical skills, lacking in non-formally acquired human values as an all-round person. What is referred to as academic education is inseparably intertwined with non-formally acquired human values. Education itself begins with and is capped by other values. Paulo Freire says that education is an act of love and an act of courage. A doctor without love will not have the same empathy as one who is driven by love for humanity. It follows then that inattentiveness to non-formal education has a role in retarding an all-round development of a person. Parents’ role in shaping their children in the right human values non-formally is minimized by over-emphasis on formal and structured education. Parents’ role need to be brought to the fore and strengthened in order to build and better future generation. Non-formal education should work with formal education complementarily. It is our contention in this article that parents be accorded more room and more support as they impact their children non-formally. This is will enhance better appropriation of values. |
