Motor Learning–based Basketball Talent Development Program for Beginners: Integrating Olympic Values for Cultural and Skill Formation

Abstract This study developed and evaluated a Motor Learning–Based Basketball Talent Development Program for Beginners integrating Olympic Values as a basis for cultural and skill formation. Specifically, it aimed to determine the level of basketball shooting skills among beginners before and after the implementation of the program, examine significant differences in shooting performance, assess the extent to which the program was manifested in terms of the cognitive, associative, and autonomous stages of Motor Learning Theory, determine the level of cultural education in terms of excellence, respect, and friendship, and identify implications for improving cultural education and skill development among beginner players.
The study employed a mixed-methods approach utilizing a one-group pretest– posttest design and qualitative inquiry. Participants consisted of beginner college students from Minnan University of Science and Technology, Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. Data were gathered through a Basketball Shooting Skills Assessment based on the BEEF (Balance, Eyes, Elbow, and Follow-through) principle, a validated questionnaire measuring motor learning stages and Olympic values, and semi- structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, weighted mean, and paired-samples t-test, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis.
Results revealed that participants demonstrated substantial improvement in basketball shooting skills after the implementation of the program. Significant differences were found between pretest and posttest scores in all shooting skill components—Balance,Eyes,Elbows, and Follow-through—with all comparisons yielding statistically significant results (p < .001) and large effect sizes. The program was manifested to a high extent in terms of the cognitive stage (GWM = 4.01), associative stage (GWM = 4.19), and autonomous stage (GWM = 4.12), resulting in an overall weighted mean of 4.11. Likewise, participants reported a high level of cultural education in terms of excellence (GWM = 4.20), respect (GWM = 4.15), and friendship (GWM = 4.20), with an overall weighted mean of 4.18. Qualitative findings further indicated that the program enhanced confidence, teamwork, discipline, leadership, responsibility, cooperation, respect for others, and positive interpersonal relationships among participants.
The findings suggest that integrating Motor Learning Theory and Olympic Values Education provides an effective framework for developing both basketball competence and character formation among beginner players. The study recommends the adoption of the proposed Motor Learning–Based Basketball Talent Development Program in educational institutions to strengthen sports instruction, cultural education, and holistic learner development.
