Biotechnological Interventions for Sustainable Ex Situ Conservation of Medicinal Plants

Author(s) Dr. VIBHA PANDEY
Country India
Abstract Medicinal plants is experiencing rapid decline due to overharvesting, habitat destruction and climate change, with roughly 40% of the plant species facing extinction. In such a situation, ex-situ conservation becomes essential, where species are protected outside their natural habitat. Biotechnology, plays a crucial role in strengthening ex situ conservation efforts. Techniques such as tissue culture, cloning, cryopreservation and genetic engineering help preserve genetic material, multiply endangered species and maintain genetic diversity. Through biotechnology, rare medicinal plants can be grown in laboratories in large numbers without disturbing wild populations, ensuring their availability for future use.
Keywords Medicinal plants, biodiversity, ex situ conservation, biotechnology, micropropagation.
