Abstract Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are widely used as a sustainable energy source; however, their efficiency is significantly reduced due to dust accumulation on panel surfaces. Manual cleaning methods are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and unsuitable for large-scale or remote installations. To address this issue, an Automatic Solar Dust Detection and Cleaning System is proposed using an Arduino Uno-based embedded platform.
The system uses an LDR sensor to detect light intensity variations and automatically triggers a cleaning mechanism when dust accumulation or low-light conditions are detected. The cleaning system consists of DC geared motors, a brush motor, and a blower system controlled through an L293D motor driver. A voltage sensor continuously monitors solar panel output, and real-time data is displayed on a 16×2 I2C LCD display.
The proposed system improves solar efficiency, reduces maintenance cost, and enables automatic operation without human intervention. Experimental results confirm reliable dust detection, efficient cleaning performance, and stable voltage monitoring.
