Integrating Indian Knowledge Systems into Modern Pedagogy: Tradition-Inspired Approaches

Abstract The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is a vast and time-honored repository of wisdom, developed over thousands of years and deeply rooted in ancient texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, and Puranas. It covers various fields such as philosophy, science, mathematics, and medicine, following a holistic approach that integrates the mind, body, and spirit. A key principle of this system is interconnectedness, embodied in the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam-"the world is one family." However, the dominance of standardized, Western-influenced education models has led to the marginalization of IKS in mainstream pedagogy. This paper examines the role of Indian Knowledge Systems in shaping contemporary education and introduces pedagogical strategies inspired by Indian traditions that can transform modern learning experiences in India. Referencing ancient texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, and Arthashastra, as well as disciplines like Ayurveda, Yoga, and Vedic Mathematics, it advocates for a more holistic and integrative educational framework. Integrating these principles into modern pedagogy can foster critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and interdisciplinary learning. Furthermore, this study explores historical educational models, including the Gurukul system, Vedic inquiry methods, and practices like Seva (selfless service), assessing their relevance in contemporary classrooms. By bridging traditional wisdom with modern educational demands, this approach paves the way for a more enriched, balanced, and culturally resonant learning experience in India and beyond.
