Digital Twins for Real-Time Supply Chain Visibility: Architecture, Use Cases, and Implementation Framework

Author(s) Mr. Sahil Bansal
Country United States
Abstract Digital twin technology has crossed the threshold from experimental concept to proven operational capability, with deployments delivering 20-50% performance improvements across manufacturing, warehousing, transportation, and end-to-end supply chain networks. The global market is expanding at a 30% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2027, with 29% of global manufacturers now implementing digital twin strategies [5]. This paper synthesizes findings from 33 peer-reviewed and industry sources to provide operations leaders with a comprehensive reference covering: (1) the multi-layered architecture and enabling technology stack; (2) quantified outcomes across supply chain tiers; (3) a five-stage maturity model with the Digital Twin Readiness Score (DTRS) for organizational self-assessment; and (4) a phased implementation framework spanning foundation, pilot, and enterprise-scale deployment. A core finding is that digital twins deliver transformative value only when organizations face multidimensional decision complexity and have achieved Stage 3+ maturity [6,7]. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations and future research directions covering autonomous twins and generative AI integration.
