| Abstract | The growing dependence on imported crude-oil represents significant economic, energy security and environmental challenges for India. Simultaneously, there has been a rapid expansion in the electric vehicle market in India as part of a strategic move towards sustainability and to lower the reliance on fossil fuel. The development of India’s EV market is not solely dependent on consumer preferences, it is also influenced by the supply-side constraints such as battery availability, manufacturing capacity, charging infrastructure, and the input costs. This research examines how the changing prices of crude-oil and the government intervention have influenced the demand-supply dynamics of the electric vehicle market between 2018 and 2026. The study uses qualitative research design based on secondary data, that synthesises evidence from peer reviewed journal articles, international organisation reports, government publications, and industry data to analyse the interaction between public policy and market forces. Based on the demand and supply theory, this study explores how the volatility of crude-oil prices affected the consumer demand for EVs, while the government production incentives influenced market supply. The paper contributes to the literature by integrating market theory, sustainability and energy economics within the demand-supply framework, offering insights into the accelerated transition of India’s transport system. |
