Implementing Continuous Monitoring of IoT Data Streams into Legacy Database Analytics for Dynamic Underwriting

| Abstract | The proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) has catalyzed a fundamental transformation in data generation across the financial services landscape, yet the insurance industry remains largely tethered to legacy database architectures that favor batch processing over real-time agility. This paper addresses the critical systemic gap between high-velocity IoT data streams and the static nature of traditional risk assessment frameworks. We propose a novel hybrid integration framework designed to ingest continuous streams from telematics and sensor-based ecosystems directly into legacy analytical environments. By establishing a specialized middleware layer for data normalization and schema compatibility, the framework enables a transition from periodic, historical risk evaluation to dynamic underwriting. The study delineates a methodology for stream processing that respects the structural rigidities of incumbent relational databases while leveraging machine learning techniques for feature extraction. Our findings demonstrate that integrating real-time telemetry not only enhances the granularity of risk intelligence but also optimizes operational responsiveness in policy pricing and fraud detection. This research provides a technical roadmap for institutional digital transformation, proving that legacy infrastructure can be effectively augmented to support the next generation of predictive financial analytics without requiring immediate, wholesale system replacement. |
