Forest Surveillance Through Drones: A Modern Approach for Forest Monitoring and Conservation

Author(s) Ms. Nidhi Saraswat
Country India
Abstract Forests are essential natural resources that support biodiversity, regulate climate, prevent soil erosion, and contribute to ecological sustainability. However, increasing threats such as illegal logging, forest fires, wildlife poaching, deforestation, and climate change have created a need for efficient forest monitoring systems. Traditional methods of forest surveillance are often labor-intensive, expensive, and limited in coverage. Recent advancements in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, have revolutionized forest monitoring by providing high-resolution, real-time, and cost-effective data collection capabilities. Drones equipped with RGB cameras, thermal sensors, multispectral sensors, hyperspectral sensors, and LiDAR technology can monitor forest health, detect fires, assess biodiversity, and identify illegal activities. This paper explores the applications, benefits, challenges, and future prospects of drone-based forest surveillance and highlights its significance in sustainable forest management.
