Research Methodology in Chemical Sciences: Origin, Development, and Evolution in India—A Historical and Contemporary Analytical Framework

Author(s) Mr. Ravulapati Chaturvedi, Ms. Ravulapati Rupa
Country India
Abstract Research methodology in chemical sciences has evolved from traditional material-processing practices and empirical experimentation to systematic laboratory investigation, quantitative measurement, computational modelling, and interdisciplinary research. India offers a distinctive context for studying this transformation because its chemical knowledge traditions, colonial-era scientific institutions, post-independence research infrastructure, and contemporary innovation policies have contributed to different phases of scientific development. This paper examines the historical evolution of chemical research methodology in India and proposes an analytical framework for understanding its changing characteristics. A qualitative historical-review approach is adopted, drawing on institutional histories, science-policy documents, scholarly literature, and established principles of scientific research. The analysis organizes the evolution of chemical research into five broad phases: traditional chemical knowledge, institutionalization of modern chemistry, expansion of national research laboratories, technological diversification, and digitally enabled interdisciplinary research. The paper further proposes a five-dimensional framework encompassing experimental rigor, reproducibility, digital integration, sustainability, and research translation. These dimensions are synthesized into an illustrative assessment matrix intended to guide future empirical investigations. The analysis highlights persistent methodological priorities, including transparent reporting, validated analytical procedures, appropriate statistical treatment, responsible data management, and ethical scientific communication. It also identifies opportunities for strengthening research capacity through shared instrumentation, university–industry collaboration, green chemistry, computational methods, and structured research training. The proposed framework is conceptual rather than experimentally validated and requires evaluation through institutional case studies and researcher surveys. The paper provides a foundation for examining how historical experience and contemporary research policy can inform more rigorous, inclusive, and sustainable chemical research in India.
