Abstract | The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), instituted by the United Nations in 2015, offer a worldwide framework for tackling essential social, economic, and environmental issues. This descriptive study examines the strategic initiatives implemented by two prominent private sector banks—Axis Bank and ICICI Bank—in Vadodara, India, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study utilises secondary data from public papers, bank disclosures, and official documents to underscore the diverse initiatives undertaken by major banks to promote sustainable development. Primary focal points are inexpensive and renewable energy, financial inclusion, education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and responsible consumerism. The results indicate that both banks have established extensive sustainability frameworks, enacted specific Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies, and initiated various CSR programs focused on rural development, women's empowerment, renewable energy financing, and inclusive economic growth. Despite notable advancements, the analysis reveals deficiencies, especially in relation to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and emphasises the necessity for more robust institutional collaborations to amplify impact. The study asserts that these banks are strategically positioned to significantly contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by continuous innovation, policy integration, and collaborative efforts. |
