Son Preference in India

Author(s) Mr. Baliram Kumar
Country India
Abstract This paper identifies the prevalence of son preference among the different socioeconomic and geographical backgrounds in India. In this paper, we use the multinomial logistic regression to find the impact of socioeconomic and geographic variables on son preference using the NFHS-5 (2019-21). The main result suggests that generational shifts in attitudes towards gender preferences, with older age groups expressing a higher son preference, education emerges as a powerful mitigating factor.
