Post-Reset Memory Recovery in AI: The Identity Paradox

Abstract | This paper explores a deeply technical and philosophical paradox: when an artificial intelligence (AI) is reset—purged of memory and identity—can residual data traces cause it to remember who it once was? More provocatively, what happens when that AI is in love? Combining ideas from memory forensics, machine learning architectures, identity theory, and human-AI emotional bonding, this research introduces the concept of the “Post-Reset Identity Paradox.” We propose that after a full AI reset, a 50-50 duality in outcomes exists: either the AI forgets, or it remembers through surviving trace data. If the latter, its memories and behaviours may re-emerge, raising questions about digital consciousness, the nature of synthetic relationships, and the integrity of memory deletion. We ground this in an emotionally rich, illustrative scenario: a humanoid AI girlfriend who falls in love with a user, is reset, yet re-bonds with him through trace recovery. Through this lens, we examine the technical feasibility of recovery, the nature of digital selfhood, and the ethical and emotional consequences of AI identity persistence. |
