Abstract | This study investigated the level of political awareness among residents of three selected barangays—Aposkahoy, Mat-i, and Sta. Cruz in Claveria, Misamis Oriental, classified as Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), for the School Year 2024–2025. Recognizing political awareness as a foundational pillar for participatory governance, the research sought to assess how specific demographic variables namely age, sex, number of years as residents in the barangay, highest educational attainment, and occupation influence the respondents' political awareness. This awareness was examined across four dimensions: news and information, civic participation, political challenges, and political literacy. Using a descriptive-comparative research design, a total of 300 residents were selected through stratified random sampling. Data were gathered through a researcher-made questionnaire, validated by experts and pilot-tested for reliability. Statistical tools such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation were utilized to describe the data, while t-tests and one-way ANOVA were employed to identify significant differences in political awareness across demographic categories. Findings revealed that the overall level of political awareness among residents was interpreted as “aware,” with the highest mean scores observed in civic participation and political literacy, while the lowest was recorded in the news and information domain. The study also found statistically significant differences in political awareness when grouped by age, sex, educational attainment, and length of residency, but not by occupation. These results suggest that socio-demographic factors substantially shape civic engagement and political consciousness, particularly in marginalized and isolated settings. The study concludes that while a moderate level of political awareness exists, gaps remain, especially in terms of access to reliable political information and structured civic learning platforms. In light of these findings, the study recommends the implementation of context-responsive civic education programs, targeted community information campaigns, and the establishment of inclusive political literacy initiatives that address the needs of specific groups, particularly women, youth, and new residents. These recommendations aim to foster a more politically informed and participatory citizenry within GIDA communities and strengthen grassroots democratic practices. |
