Abstract | Low birth weight (LBW) is one of the most serious challenges in maternal and child health, especially in developing countries such as India. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Low birth weight as a birth weight of less than 2,500 grams, irrespective of the period of gestation. Low birth weight estimates shows that globally in 2020, 1 in 7 newborns (14.7% or 19.8 million newborns) were born with low birth weight. The 2025 global target of a 30% reduction of low birth weight compared to levels in 2012 levels is not on track to be met. |
