Archaeology and Inscriptions of Tamil Nadu: Historical Explorations and New Directions

Author(s) Dr. Jansi Rani W
Country India
Abstract The archaeology and inscriptions of Tamil Nadu provide a fascinating window into the region's ancient history, cultural richness, and socio-political dynamics. This paper explores the interplay between material culture and epigraphic evidence, shedding light on the development of early Tamil society, its trade connections, religious practices, and administrative systems. Key archaeological sites such as Keeladi, Adichanallur, and Kodumanal, along with inscriptions from the Pallava, Chola, and Pandya periods, serve as critical sources for reconstructing the past. These findings reveal the sophistication of Tamil Nadu's early urbanization, maritime trade networks, and literary traditions, as evidenced by Sangam literature and Brahmi inscriptions. The presentation also emphasizes the role of emerging technologies, such as remote sensing, GIS mapping, and digital epigraphy, in transforming archaeological and historical research. By integrating interdisciplinary approaches, this paper highlights new directions in the study of Tamil Nadu's heritage, addressing gaps in historical narratives and offering fresh perspectives. Ultimately, it underscores the importance of preserving and interpreting these invaluable resources to deepen our understanding of Tamil Nadu's contributions to India's cultural and historical legacy
