The Role of Ozone Therapy in Periodontal Diseases: A Systematic Review

Author(s) Prof. Dr. Dhirendra Kumar Singh, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jalaluddin

Abstract Periodontal diseases, encompassing gingivitis and periodontitis, are chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth, often leading to tooth loss if left untreated. Conventional therapies, primarily scaling and root planing (SRP), aim to remove bacterial plaque and calculus. However, the persistent presence of pathogenic microorganisms and the complex inflammatory response necessitate adjunctive therapies. Ozone (O3) therapy, with its potent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerative properties, has emerged as a promising adjunct in periodontics. This systematic review aims to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of ozone therapy in the management of periodontal diseases by synthesizing evidence from clinical trials published across major databases including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.
