Abstract This study examined the relationship between learners’ interest in learning English and their communication skills in the District of San Jose, Antique, during the school year 2024–2025. Using a descriptive-correlational research design, the study determined the levels of learners’ interest in English in terms of motivation, engagement, and attitude toward the language, as well as their communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The respondents consisted of 108 teachers in charge, selected through total enumeration, who assessed learners’ interest and communication abilities. Data were gathered using a researcher-developed and validated questionnaire that demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.88).
Results showed that learners exhibited a moderately high level of interest in learning English, with motivation receiving the highest rating, followed by engagement and attitude toward English. Learners’ communication skills were also rated moderately high, with listening skills showing the strongest performance and writing skills receiving the lowest rating. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between learners’ interest in learning English and their communication skills. These findings suggest that higher levels of learner motivation and engagement are associated with improved English language performance. The study highlights the importance of fostering learners’ interest through interactive teaching strategies and targeted interventions to enhance both motivation and communication proficiency.
